Drinking from a Fire Hose: Leveraging Twitter Chats for Learning

One of the benefits of CCCE membership is that anyone from your company can attend meetings. Please invite your colleagues.

To accommodate people with allergies to perfume the CCCE asks that attendees arrive scent-free for monthly meetings.

Microblogging has emerged as a tool for networking and communication among millions of people. The most popular application, Twitter, allows virtual groups to form spontaneously around shared interests and set times to come together to discuss a topic in “Twitter” chats. These synchronous online chats can result in an overwhelming intensity of discussion reminiscent of “drinking from a fire hose”. While potentially overwhelming, Twitter chats also offer an unparalleled way to engage with others in a dynamic and collaborative learning experience.

This session will help you leverage Twitter chats to promote learning and professional development within your organization. Find out how to set yourself up for success and avoid common pitfalls when facilitating or participating in a Twitter chat.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe what a Twitter chat is
  • Identity how participating in Twitter chats can help you develop your own skills and knowledge
  • Identify ways that Twitter chats can be leveraged in the instructional design of your learning experiences
  • Recognize how a Twitter chat works
  • Identify success strategies and coping mechanisms for organizing a Twitter chat
  • Identity success strategies and coping mechanisms for participating in a Twitter chat
