Session Description:

In Canada, we’re doing a lousy job of engaging our employees in their work.

Current estimates suggest that only 27% are actively and positively engaged. In the US, the number hovers around 32%. Despite inspiring speeches by senior leaders, millions spent on leadership training for managers, and “perks and motivational programmes” for employees, these numbers haven’t budged in the last few years.

The problem is that our study of engagement starts in the wrong place because we completely misunderstand the operations of the human mind. We have two minds not one to get us through the day. The rational mind allows us to talk, decide and command while the emotional mind is the source of the energy behind committed work. Our emotional, or Elephant mind, releases its full neural energy into work when it reads persistent, positive, emotional connections with others. These connections are created when managers use simple, powerful talk that “rational” organizations reject, ignore or simply consider unnecessary in the workplace. However, when managers learn to “Speak Elephant” they build trust, reduce stress, and release the power of employees’ emotions into fully engaged work.

Speaker Biography 

Dr. Dalton Kehoe has been a teacher, organizational change practitioner, and communications consultant for over 40 years. He retired from York University in Toronto after a 41-year career as Senior Scholar of Communication Studies. He continues as a highly rated seminar leader for the Schulich Executive Education Centre where he leads a quarterly seminar on his recent book Mindful Management: The Neuroscience of Trust and Effective Workplace Leadership. It received positive reviews in the Canadian business press and was listed as one of the five best business books of 2016 by Forbes Magazine. His works have received honourable mentions in a wide variety of publications including The EconomistThe New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
